Overview
In most cases, a study permit is required in order to study in Canada.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to study in Canada, foreign nationals must demonstrate that they:
- have been accepted by a designated learning institution in Canada.
- have enough money to pay for their:
- tuition fees
- living expenses for themselves and any accompanying family members and
- return transportation for themselves and any accompanying family members.
- are law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada (police certificate is required).
- are in good health and willing to complete a medical examination, if necessary
- will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.
Exceptions
In some cases, a study permit is not required to go to school in Canada.
- Short-term courses or programs: A study permit is not required when foreign nationals plan to take a course or program in Canada that lasts six months or less.
- Foreign representatives to Canada: If a foreign national is a a family member or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada accredited by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), they may not need a permit to study in Canada.
- Members of foreign armed forces: If you a foreign national is a member of a foreign armed force under the Visiting Forces Act, they do not need a permit to study in Canada.
- Foreign nationals who are Registered Indians in Canada: If a foreign national is a citizen of another country who has Registered Indian status in Canada, they do not need a permit to study in Canada.
